Based on genome-to-genome analyses of gene sequences obtained from plant-parasitic, root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), it seems likely that certain genes have been derived from bacteria by horizontal gene transfer. Strikingly, a common theme underpinning the function of these genes is their apparent direct relationship to the nematodes' parasitic lifestyle. Phylogenetic analyses implicate rhizobacteria as the predominant group of 'gene donor' bacteria. Root-knot nematodes and rhizobia occupy similar niches in the soil and in roots, and thus the opportunity for genetic exchange may be omnipresent. Further, both organisms establish intimate developmental interactions with host plants, and mounting evidence suggests that the mechanisms for these interactions are shared too. We propose that the origin of parasitism in Meloidogyne may have been facilitated by acquisition of genetic material from soil bacteria through horizontal transfer, and that such events represented key steps in speciation of plant-parasitic nematodes. To further understand the mechanisms of horizontal gene transfer, and also to provide experimental tools to manipulate this promising bio-control agent, we have initiated a genomic sequence of the bacterial hyper-parasite of plant parasitic nematodes, Pasteuria penetrans. Initial data have established that P. penetrans is closely related to Bacillus spp., to the extent that considerable genome synteny is apparent. Common wheat (Triticum aestivum L., 2n = 6x = 42) is a polyploid species possessing one of the largest genomes among the cultivated crops (1C is approximately 17 000 Mb). The presence of three homoeologous genomes (A, B and D), and the prevalence of repetitive DNA make sequencing the wheat genome a daunting task. We have developed a novel 'chromosome arm-based' strategy for wheat genome sequencing to simplify this task; this relies on sub-genomic libraries of large DNA inserts. In this paper, we used a di-telosomic line of wheat to isolate six million copies of the short arm of chromosome 1B (1BS) by flow sorting. Chromosomal DNA was partially digested with HindIII and used to construct an arm-specific BAC library. The library consists of 65 280 clones with an average insert size of 82 kb. Almost half of the library (45%) has inserts larger than 100 kb, while 18% of the inserts range in size between 75 and 100 kb, and 37% are shorter than 75 kb. We estimated the chromosome arm coverage to be 14.5-fold, giving a 99.9% probability of identifying a clone corresponding to any sequence on the short arm of 1B. Each chromosome arm in wheat can be flow sorted from an appropriate cytogenetic stock, and we envisage that the availability of chromosome arm-specific BAC resources in wheat will greatly facilitate the development of ready-to-sequence physical maps and map-based gene cloning. 相似文献

Life-history theory is based on the assumption that evolution is constrained by trade-offs among different traits that contribute to fitness. Such trade-offs should be evident from negative genetic correlations among major life-history traits. However, this expectation is not always met. Here I report the results of a life-table experiment designed to measure the broad-sense heritabilities of life-history traits and their genetic correlations in 19 different clones of the aphid Myzus persicae from Victoria, Australia. Most individual traits, as well as fitness calculated as the finite rate of increase from the life table, exhibited highly significant heritabilities. The pattern of genetic correlations revealed absolutely no evidence for life-history trade-offs. Rather, life histories were arranged along an axis from better to worse. Clones with shorter development times tended to have larger body sizes, higher fecundities, and larger offspring. The fitness of clones estimated from the life table in the laboratory tended to be positively associated with their abundance in the field. Fitness also increased significantly with heterozygosity at the seven microsatellite loci that were used to distinguish clones and estimate their frequencies in the field. I discuss these findings in light of a recent proposition that positive genetic correlations among life-history traits for which trade-offs are expected can be explained by genetic variation for resource acquisition ability that is maintained in populations by a cost of acquisition, and I propose ways to test for such a cost in M. persicae. 相似文献

Breeding waterfowl communities were studied in 28 lakes in three areas in North Europe, along gradients of acid precipitation and alkalinity that result in lake conditions ranging from unaffected to strongly acidified. Acidic lakes had generally sparser and less complex vegetation, and fewer invertebrates were caught in activity traps. There was neither correlation between pH and waterfowl species richness (genus Anas, family Anatidae, and waterfowl sensu latu tested separately), nor between pH and waterfowl diversity (Simpson's index). Further, pH and waterfowl population density (genus Anas, family Anatidae, and waterfowl sensu latu) were not correlated, but when functional rather than taxonomic groups were considered, pH and relative abundance of fish-eating species (Gaviidae and Podicipedidae) were correlated. However, the relative abundance of Bucephala clangula, a diving duck that may compete with fish for food, was not correlated with pH. Although individual species may be affected, community level responses of waterfowl to acidity are either absent or hard to detect at our sites. 相似文献

Synopsis A comparison was done between growth in Atlantic salmon,Salmo salar, parr from natal rivers and small tributaries in the subarctic River Teno watercourse in northern Finland (70° N, 28° E).
Salmon do not spawn in these tributaries but juveniles enter the brooks from their spawning rivers. Parr from these brooks
(age groups 1 + and 2 +) were larger, so were their recorded annual growth increments, than those caught simultaneously in
the River Teno. First year growth was also better in brook parr, although both groups had spent their first year in the main
river. The brook water temperature was lower than that in the main rivers through-out the growing season. On the other hand,
drifting food resources were more abundant in brooks. It has been suggested that better growth and a longer residence in fresh
water result in the larger smolts being produced in the brooks relative to the main river. Differences in habitat selection
and subsequent differences in the smolt age and size of fish from the same place of origin reflect the distinct life histories

In plants whose flowers develop in a sequence, different flowers may exhibit temporal variation in pollen donation and receipt such that the fitness contributions through male and female functions can vary among flowers. Dichogamy, or directional pollinator movements within inflorescences, can create situations where flowers in different stages in the sequence may differ in the numbers of flowers in the female stage available as potential mates. We present an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) analysis of the resource allocations expected in different flowers in hermaphroditic plants when the mating environments vary among flowers. This introduces a modular element into sex-allocation models. Our analysis shows that such variation in the mating environments of flowers can select for differences in sex allocation between flowers. When male and female fertilities are nonlinear functions of the allocations, variation in resource availability can also select for variation in sex allocation among flowers. The influence of dichogamy and pollinator directionality on floral sex allocation is discussed, and the empirical evidence supporting the predictions derived from the model is briefly reviewed. The implications of our results for the evolution of andromonoecy and monoecy are discussed. 相似文献

Abstract: Bioprocess engineering may be defined as the translation of life-science discoveries into practical products, processes, or systems capable of serving the needs of society. It is a critical link from discovery to commercialization. Current bioprocess engineering is primarily focused on biopharmaceutical products of high dollar value per gram such as erythropoietin or growth hormones. However, other products of current interest include ethanol, amino acids, organic acids, antibiotics, and specialty chemicals. Current challenges for increased use of bioprocesses for producing bulk and semi-bulk chemicals include both technical and infrastructural barriers. Technical barriers are easy to identify and at times can be overcome by engineering improvements or changes brought about radical developments in science (e.g. recombinant DNA). Infrastructural barriers, such as raw-material substitutions or educational limitations are more difficult to define and change. Recently the National Academy of Sciences examined barriers to bioprocess engineering and issued a report entitled: "Putting Biotechnology to Work: Bioprocess Engineering". A key recommendation was the establishment of a coordinated long-range plan of research, development, training and education in bioprocess engineering involving participation by industry, academe and the federal government. The report was the first national analysis devoted entirely to bioprocess engineering and covered new topics such as space bioprocess engineering. Other topics covered by the author include the current state of the US chemical industry and future directions in three promising areas of bioprocess engineering environmental bioprocess engineering, marine bioprocess engineering and microsystem bioprocess engineering. 相似文献
